La actriz Patricia Medina, fallecida el 28 de abril a los 92 años, tenía un fuerte acento inglés pero su fisonomía latina y su aspecto voluptuoso le sirvieron para evitar los papeles de personajes ingleses. Nacida en Liverpool en 1919, era hija de padre español y madre inglesa.
Medina apareció en más de 50 películas. Rara vez tuvo que hacer gala de grandes dotes interpretativas. Aprovechó la oportunidad que tuvo de trabajar con un director como Orson Welles en Confidential report (1955), interpretando a una bailarina que intenta seducir a un Welles metido en la piel de un rico amnésico.
En los últimos años de su adolescencia hizo una prueba en los estudios Elstree: “Estaba claro que no sabía interpretar. No podía creer que les gustara, pero un productor me dijo que su buena opinión sobre mí se debía a que era guapa”, recordaba. Hizo 10 películas en Gran Bretaña entre 1937 y 1945 (El gran Mitchell (1942) y They met in the dark (1943), con James Mason), etapa en la que fue considerada “la más bonita de Inglaterra”.
En 1945, se mudó a Los Ángeles para participar en el melodrama Desconfianza (1946), aunque apenas destacó en unos créditos encabezados por Claudette Colbert, Walter Pidgeon y June Allyson. Continuó con un papel de mujer seductora en Débil es la carne (1947) y El capitán O’Flynn (1949). Después de dar vida a la famosa acémila parlante en Mi mula Francis (1950), aceptó el reto de meterse en la piel de una experta en el manejo de la espada, protagonizando cuatro filmes: Fortunes of captain Blood (1950); la secuela Bandera pirata (1952), Las aventuras de Dick Turpin (1951) y Lady in the iron mask (1952).
Se volcó en la recreación del mundo de las Mil y una noches con La alfombra mágica (1951), Aladdin and his lamp (1952) y Siren of Bagdad (1953) con sus bellos ojos centelleando tras el velo. En los cincuenta se convirtió en la obsesión de Karl Malden, el biólogo misógino de El fantasma de la calle Morgue (1954).
Además de aparecer en episodios de El zorro y en series sobre el lejano Oeste, en 1962 debutó con su segundo marido, Joseph Cotten, en Broadway con Calculated risk, una novela policíaca que se representó seis meses.
Cuando la salud de Cotten se deterioró, Medina se volcó en cuidarlo, trabajando esporádicamente. En 1998 publicó sus memorias, Laid back in Hoollywood: remembering.

Biografía

El padre de la actriz, Ramón Medina Nebot, había nacido en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (España) pero conoció en Inglaterra a Wonda, la que sería su esposa y se estableció allí para siempre.² Sobre sus orígenes canarios la propia actriz reconocía en una entrevista: "mi padre es canario y, a pesar de ello, mi hermana pequeña nunca llegó a conocer las islas. Quien sí las conoce bien es la mayor".³
Patricia es la segunda de tres hermanas, Piti (Pepita) la mayor, y Gloria la más pequeña. Patricia pasó su infancia en una bella mansión de Stanmore donde la música era protagonista: su padre era tenor y llegó a cantar en la Scala de Milán con el seudónimo de Nevotti y mientras su hermana Piti tocaba el piano, Gloria cantaba admirablemente.⁴ Empieza su carrera cinematográfica en Inglaterra, muy joven, y participando en papeles secundarios. Debutó en 1937 con un pequeño papel en la comedia Dinner at the Ritz, dirigida por Harold D. Schuster, cuyos protagonistas eran Annabella y David Niven. En 1946 se marcha a Estados Unidos acompañando a su esposo Richard Greene, con quien se había casado el 24 de diciembre de 1941. En suelo estadounidense su primer trabajo fue en Corazón secreto de la Metro Goldwyn Mayer, junto a Claudette Colbert, Walter Pidgeon y June Allyson. Y aunque es posible verla en Débil es la carne y en Los Tres Mosqueteros en roles breves, su primer papel estelar llegaría en 1950 en La legión extranjera comedia de Bud Abbott y Lou Costello, dirigida por Charles Lamont.
Patricia Medina se divorció de Richard Greene el 25 de junio de 1951, sin que tuvieran descendencia. Aunque ella decía que no volvería a casarse, el 20 de octubre de 1960 se casó con Joseph Cotten,en Beverly Hills en la casa de David O. Selznick y Jennifer Jones; y este matrimonio se mantuvo unido hasta la muerte de Joseph Cotten el 6 de febrero de 1994.⁵
En 1998, Patricia Medina publicó su autobiografía con el título Laid Back in Hollywood: Remembering.

Carrera cinematográfica.

Desde su llegada a Estados Unidos en 1946, hizo televisión, teatro y mucho cine, llegando a protagonizar hasta cuatro películas en un mismo año. Aunque no pueda decirse que tuvo una carrera muy destacada, pues trabajó sobre todo en películas de Clase B, sí que tuvo la oportunidad de ser dirigida por los directores más conocidos (Orson Welles, Robert Aldrich, George Sidney, Jean Negulesco, Richard Quine, Tay Garnett, Gordon Douglas...), y de rodar junto a muchas "estrellas" de la época (Gene Kelly, Lana Turner, James Mason, Alan Ladd, Orson Welles, Douglas Fairbanks,James Stewart, Natalie Wood, Maurice Chevalier, Glenn Ford, Karl Malden, Deborah Kerr...) Por su belleza morena, los estudios la encasillaron -como le solía pasar a casi todos los actores- en un tipo de papel determinado, que en su caso fue el de exótica aventurera y, aunque muchas de sus películas no llegaron a España, fue la protagonista en la mayoría de ellas.⁶ Trabajó en Inglaterra, Estados Unidos, España, Japón y en los estudios más famosos de Hollywood (Universal, Columbia, Paramount, Warner Brothers, Metro Goldwyn Mayer, United Artists, 20th Century Fox...)
Patricia y Joseph Cotten rodaron algunas películas menores juntos pero, en rigor, se dedicaron más a trabajar en obras de teatro, tanto en los Estados Unidos como en Inglaterra. Sus apariciones en televisión incluyen su participación en la serie El Zorro entre 1957 y 1959, un capítulo de la serie Bonanza titulado "The Spanish Grant" (emitido por primera vez el 6 de febrero de 1960) y en The Alfred Hitchcock Hour el capítulo titulado "See the Monkey Dance" (emitido por primera vez el 9 de noviembre de 1964).

Medina starred in Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion (1950), Sangaree with Fernando Lamas (1953), Plunder of the Sun with Glenn Ford (1953), Botany Bay with Alan Ladd (1953) and Phantom of the Rue Morgue with Karl Malden (1954).
She also played opposite Louis Hayward in the '50s adventure films Fortunes of Captain Blood, The Lady and the Bandit, Lady in the Iron Mask and Captain Pirate.
Medina and Greene were divorced in 1951. In 1960, she wed the widowed Cotten, who had made his feature film debut in Welles' 1941 classic Citizen Kane.
They appeared in a number of stage productions together. Medina made her Broadway debut in 1962 in Calculated Risk, starring Cotten, who died in 1994.

The actress who became a leading lady of Hollywood films in the 1950s opposite Glenn Ford, Alan Ladd, Karl Malden and Fernando Lamas has died in Los Angeles. Patricia Medina was 92.
Her friend, Meredith Silverbach, told the Los Angeles Times () that Medina had been in declining health and that she died Saturday at Barlow Respiratory Hospital.The British-born actress was the widow of actor Joseph Cotten. She arrived in Hollywood after World War II and signed with the MGM studios.
She had lead roles in "Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion" in 1950, "Sangaree" with Lamas in 1953, "Plunder of the Sun" with Ford in 1953, "Botany Bay" with Ladd in 1953 and "Phantom of the Rue Morgue" with Malden in 1954.
Medina wrote an autobiography, "Laid Back in Hollywood," in 1998.
